A little summer reading
Want something to read during those blissful days off? Here are some suggestions from the JEA LISTSERV.
-
I am reading World Without End by Ken Follett, having read Pillars of the World last fall — great medieval stories. For mystery fans, especially if you like them humorous, Elizabeth Peters series of Amelia Peabody stories set against a background of archeology in Egypt (she is up to about 15 books by now). • Susan V. Everett, MJE, Garden State Scholastic Press Association treasurer, JEA New Jersey state director
-
Sin in the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys and the Battle for America's Soul by Karen Abbott. It's about the Everleigh sisters who ran the highest class brothel in Chicago about 100 years ago. It also follows the anti-prostitution movement and how Chicago's politicians and underworld tried to stay ahead of reformers. • Holly Soboroff, Washington, Iowa
-
If you like young adult stuff, try Peeled by Joan Bauer. The lead character is a high-school journalist named Hildy (perhaps after Hildy from His Girl Friday?) who uses her school paper to question the integrity of the local paper's reporting methods. There is a ghost mystery involved, which is fun for teen readers, but I especially liked all the references to journalism ethics. • Mary Dempsey, O'Fallon Township High School, Ill.
-
I recommend Restless Genius: Braney Kilgore, The Wall Street Journal, And the Invention of Modern Journalism by Richard J. Tofel. • Anne Whitt, Orlando, Fla.
-
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott – worth it if only for her explanation for why children find raspberry jam unacceptable. On Writing by Stephen King – part memoir, part writing guide. And funny in parts. He describes a hangover headache as like having “a mouthful of infected teeth.” • Bretton Zinger, MJE, Chantilly High School, Va.
-
Beach Music is one of my all-time favorites. Really great descriptions!• Karen Ford, Holton, Kan.
-
Straight Man by Richard Russo. Great summer read about a middle-aged college professor...something many of us can relate to. Insightful and laugh-out-loud funny. The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby. Not a quick read, but a must for anyone troubled by the anti-intellectuals coming at us from all sides. • Bryan Halpern, Glenbrook North High School, Northbrook, Ill.
